    Post Micro820, Micro850 Ethernet/IP Capabilities

    Hello Everyone,

I hope you all are doing great. I mostly work around Micro800 - CompactLogix controllers and have few questions regarding this.

    1. Can we use ethernet protocol to connect to Micro820 and Micro850 controller? Is there any specific protocols we have to use?
    2. What is the difference/features between Micro820-Micro850 and Micrologix controllers in regards with the connectivity?
    3. Can we pull information from CompactLogix controller to Micro850? I need to monitor one tag/signal from CompactLogix -> Micro850. Is this possible? OR we have to use similar model PLCs for this?

Please give your inputs to the above questions and feel free to suggest any alternate solutions you may have.

    Thanks in advance,
    Maitrey Pandya

    Good afternoon @maitrey27,

I'll try to answer your questions below:

    1. What protocols does the Micro820 and Micro850 support?

Inside CCW you'll see the Ethernet port supports:
    - CIP (Rockwell's Etherne/IP protocol)
    - Modbus TCP Server

    And the Serial Port supports:
    - Modbus RTU, Master or Slave
    - DF1 aka CIP Serial
    - ASCII

    2. What is the difference/features between Micro820-Micro850 and Micrologix 1100/1400 in regards with the connectivity?

This is a wide open question, but the short version is:
    - The serial port protocol support is wider in the MicroLogix 1100/1400, but
    - On Ethernet the 1100 only supports CIP, while the 1400 also supports Modbus TCP and DNP 3

    3. Can we pull information from CompactLogix controller to Micro850?

    - Sure can - Rockwell has lots of examples too - see last link below

    Hello Shawn,

Thanks for the explanation. This makes sense!

So, In order to monitor modbus mapping data of Micro820 controller. Two Micro820(Master) & Micro820(Slave) need to connected at the same time!?

I was wondering what If I use actual Micro820 controller w/ Micro850 Simulator to monitor modbus data!? This may sound crazy. Any thoughts!?

    Thanks,
    Maitrey

    Good afternoon @maitrey27,

It would be so much easier to send data back and forth between Micro800s over Ethernet using CIP since you would not have to do the Modbus Mapping.

    Good morning @Shwan Tierney,

I have already tried that. I was just curious about alternative methods and wanted to implement each method.

For the Modbus Mapping, If I create Modbus Mapping table in my program and assign address (manually)? Do I have to modify anything else in the program?

    Example;

If I have X (BOOL) in the Program somewhere which I want to monitor through Modbus TCP. Can I just pull that "X" and assign 000001 address to it and that's it? Please let me know.

    Thanks,
    Maitrey Pandya

    Hello @Shawn Tierney,

Thanks for explanation. I have already tried that method and it works just fine. I just wanted to explore other method as well.

As I have already created a modbus mapping table in my CCW Program. Do I need to verify this modbus table? Ex; Can I just pull up X(BOOL) Tags from program and add it in modbus table under 400001 address and that's it? Do I have to change anything else in the program? Please advise. Further, If in future I connect Micro850 PLC to this PLC via TCP then this tags just come automatically or I need set up communication using MSG and CIP instructions?

    Thanks,
    Maitrey Pandya

Then I would definitely recommend experimenting with it, and I'm sure A-B has some great tech notes on the subject!

You know, as a self employed instructor I just don't have the free time to experiment with older, outdated functions (like using Modbus TCP between Micro800s.)

And I actually avoid teaching my students about them because there's no reason to - there's just no practical reason to communicate between Micro800's using Modbus TCP when Ethernet/IP is available and much simpler, and can be used with all A-B Ethernet PLCs.

But again, I'm sure you can find details in Rockwell's Knowledgebase about Micro800 Modbus Mapping and MSGs since several years ago that was all that was available.

    Good luck,

    Good morning Shwan,

Agree on your point. There are few tech articles adress these topics. I will just follow those and see how it works out. BTW I will also post those articles over here for reference. Appreciate your help!

    Best,
    Maitrey
